For the past three days, Edith Berger has tried to check on the safety of Case Western Reserve University students who may have returned during winter break to homelands in areas hit by the tsunami disaster.
Sending out dozens of cell phone calls and e-mails, Berger and others from university departments hosting international students have reached about a half-dozen of those students so far. All were safe.
"We're family here," said Berger, director of international student services at Case.
"We really won't be happy or satisfied until they all come back."
Of the university's 1,100 international students, 58 are from Malaysia, 12 from Indonesia, 151 from India, 51 from Thailand, and one from Sri Lanka.
Berger will continue making the calls until classes resume Jan. 10.
