Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program

In Spring 2008, the State of Ohio awarded 4.5 million dollars of the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program (COFSP) to a consortium comprising Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Cuyahoga Community College, Kent State University, University of Akron and Youngstown State University to increase the number of STEM (science, technology, engineering or mathematics) students and graduates in Northeast Ohio by improving mathematics preparedness for STEM majors.

Case Western Reserve University’s Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program will provide 20 scholarships to admitted first year students who have enrolled at Case Western Reserve University to start their studies in Fall 2009.  The Choose Ohio First Scholarship program provides four year scholarships up to $4,230 per academic year.

Eligibility

In order for students to be eligible to be nominated for this scholarship, students must meet several criteria as listed below.  The first criterion is that applicants must have indicated on their applications for admission to Case Western Reserve University an interest in pursuing a major at least one of the following subjects:

 

Nominated students must also meet the federal eligibility guidelines in order to receive financial aid and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents residing in Ohio.

Eligibility is also based upon readiness to enter a calculus course. Students demonstrated this readiness by taking the Case Western Reserve University Math Diagnostic Exam. Finally applicants must complete an essay that describes their educational experiences within the fields of science, engineering, and math, and demonstrates their academic and career interests in these disciplines. 

Applicants will be judged based on demonstrated financial need, high school academic record as submitted in the application for admission to Case Western Reserve University, Math Diagnostic Exam results, and the Choose Ohio First Scholarship essay. 

Scholarship Retention

Choose Ohio First Scholarship recipients are subject to the following scholarship retention criteria that will be reviewed on an annual basis.  Scholarship recipients must:

  • Enroll as a full-time student (at least 12 credit hours) during fall and spring semesters.
  • Maintain good academic standing.
  • Demonstrate progress towards completing a bachelor’s degree in any of the majors listed above.
  • Meet federal eligibility guidelines and requirements in order to receive financial aid.
  • Participate in Chose Ohio First Scholarship Program’s educational, social, and mentoring activities each semester. 

Application Process 

Nominated students will receive a Choose Ohio First Scholarship application by September 7, 2009.  They must e-mail their applications to the email address provided on the Choose Ohio First Application no later than September 11, 2009.  Applicants will be notified no later than October 1, 2009.
