Program Specifics
Each participating professional school at Case has established conditions that must be met by students in the program to continue on to advanced study. The conditions generally include the completion of specific undergraduate courses, a B+ level of performance and continued development of personal characteristics appropriate for the study and practice of the profession each student will enter.
Dental School
PPSP dental students have two options: the six-year program beginning at the Case School of Dental Medicine after completing two years of undergraduate course work or the eight-year program that begins after the completion of the bachelor’s degree. PPSP dental students are required to take the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and achieve an average score of 16 or higher on both the academic and perceptual ability sections of the exam, and to complete prerequisite courses for dental school.
Law School
PPSP in law grants students a conditional commitment of admission to the Case School of Law upon the completion of established requirements. PPSP students in law are encouraged to gain wide cultural experiences during their undergraduate years, major in an area that most interests them, choose courses in which they will learn habits of rigorous and logical analysis, and gain as much writing experience as possible. Students are required to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and must score in the 73rd percentile or above. In addition, they must achieve a GPA in the top third of their graduating class.
Medical School
PPSP offers students the opportunity to apply for admission to the Case School of Medicine in conjunction with their application to the first-year class. Selected students complete bachelor’s degrees before beginning their professional studies; PPSP is not designated as an accelerated entrance to medical school. PPSP students who complete degree requirements in fewer than four years are required to pursue other significant experiences intended to enhance their professional and/or personal development during the semesters following receipt of their bachelor’s degree and until study at the Case School of Medicine begins. Examples of this experience may include, but are not limited to: research, study abroad, community service and/or additional undergraduate or graduate coursework. The average PPSP candidate for the Case School of Medicine will have ranked at least in the top 10 percent of his or her senior class and have an average SAT composite (math, critical reading and writing) score of 2200-2300 or an average ACT composite score of 31-34. Retention of PPSP medical students has traditionally been above 90 percent. While the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is not required for PPSP students, Pre-Professional Scholars who choose to take it must present a total score of 33 or above.
In addition, some scholarship programs for the Case School of Medicine require MCAT scores; PPSP students may choose to take the exam to be considered for merit-based aid.
Social Work
For students who are interested in careers in social work, the PPSP program grants conditional admission to the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. Admission to the master’s degree program in social work requires a minimum of 24 semester hours of coursework in the social and behavioral sciences and evidence of the personal qualities that are considered essential for the professional practice of social work.
